Indiana Unemployment Claims Now Online with SIDES

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) has officially modernized unemployment insurance claims with SIDES. Effective immediately, traditional paper forms are being phased out and replaced with the SIDES E-Response system. This is a secure, web-based platform designed to streamline claim responses and reduce the administrative burden on employers.

Every employer needs to be aware of this change. If you fail to transition promptly, you risk delayed responses and missed deadlines. Your business could face potential liability for benefit charges. Understanding and adopting SIDES will help ensure compliance and protect your bottom line.

What is SIDES E-Response?

The State Information Data Exchange System (SIDES) is a secure online portal that allows employers to respond to unemployment insurance (UI) claims electronically. The system was developed collaboratively between the US Department of Labor and state workforce agencies. SIDES was designed to improve the accuracy and speed of UI claim responses nationwide.

Indiana now joins a growing number of states that have adopted SIDES E-Response. It’s a smarter way to handle UI claims because it streamlines employer communications and reduces paperwork. SIDES will enable your business to do the following from one centralized platform:

  • Receive UI claim notices
  • Submit separation information
  • Track responses

This will lead to fewer delays for employers and reduce the amount of human error in the old paper-only system. SIDES will be a more efficient way to manage time-sensitive UI information.

Benefits of the New Online System

  • Speed: Employers will receive UI claims faster and can respond immediately.
  • Accuracy: The online format will reduce errors from manual paperwork.
  • Security: Sensitive employee data will remain protected in the portal.
  • Consistency: Standardized responses will mean less confusion for all parties.
  • Reduced Costs: Will eliminate all postage and paper handling.

What Employers Need to Do Now

SIDES E-Response in Indiana went into effect on August 15, 2025, and there’s no grace period for employers. If you haven’t done so yet, you must set up your Indiana unemployment employer profile with SIDES through the Uplink Employer Self-Service portal at:

Ensure that your company’s contact details, such as email addresses and designated points of contact, are accurate with the Indiana DWD. Incorrect or outdated information can prevent timely claim notifications.

You will want to designate staff members who will monitor incoming UI claim notices and respond promptly. These team members can be trained on SIDES procedures and the importance of meeting response deadlines. You should also review and revise your current UI claims handling process to reflect the shift to digital. It’s a good idea to automate reminders and build in safeguards to prevent missing responses or incomplete submissions.

What Happens if Employers Don’t Transition?

Every employer in Indiana is required to make the transition to SIDES E-Response. The Indiana DWD has fully digitized its claims response process. If you send in a paper submission from now on, it will not be processed and will be considered a non-response.

If an employer does not respond to a claim within the required timeframe, their account may be charged for benefits. This can happen even if the claimant was ineligible. SIDES ensures the timely delivery of employer responses and protects their accounts from unwarranted payouts.

Indiana calculates the UI tax rate for employers based on benefit charges to their accounts. Failing to respond to UI claims promptly or thoroughly can result in higher benefit payouts, which can directly impact your experience rating. This is a key factor in determining your annual unemployment tax rate. Over time, this could add up to thousands of dollars in avoidable costs.

In addition, the Indiana legislature recently passed new penalties that can be imposed on employers if they fail to submit the required separation information within 10 days of a request. It’s a $25 fine per incident, on top of any benefit charges or tax rate increases.
